Shut It Off First

Before we arrive, two valves matter. The fixture stop, usually under the sink or behind the toilet, isolates one fixture. The main shut-off, typically where the water service enters the house or at the meter near the street, stops everything. For a water heater, there’s a cold inlet valve at the top of the tank.

If you smell gas, don’t touch a switch or a phone inside. Leave, then call the gas company and us from outside.

What should I do while I wait?

Shut off the water at the fixture if you can reach the valve, or at the main if you can’t. Move what you can out of the water. Don’t run any other fixture, and don’t pour chemical drain opener into a line that’s already backed up, because it sits there and becomes a hazard for whoever opens the pipe.
